The 1960's & 1970's
About 160 marine craft were built by PBI in the 1960's, many for the US
Navy, varying from wooden minecraft to aluminum gunboats to fiberglass
personnel boats. PBI continued its dominance in the construction of wood
hull minesweepers, building four 110' MSI's and twenty-one 145' MSC's.
PBI constructed thirty-nine aluminum hull gunboats ranging from 95' to
165' and numerous smaller craft such as utility boats, oceanographic
boats, torpedo retrievers and tug boats.
During the
1970's, PBI performed a wide variety of commercial construction projects
including some of the largest ships built by PBI. These projects
included two 300' heavy lift ships, several oceanographic research ships
and boats, tuna seiners from 225' to 262' in length, car/passenger
ferries, fire and rescue boats and a variety of tug boats. PBI also
continued its Navy tradition, building thirteen YTB tug boats and nine
190' PGG gunboats for the Saudi Navy.
